About Seth Quiring
My Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey began in 2007 at the Caique Jiu-Jitsu Academy, and from the very first day, I was hooked. In 2011, while studying to become a Child and Youth Worker in London, Ontario, I earned my blue belt under Feteh Belakhem. In 2013, I returned to Windsor to train with Eric Marentette, where I achieved my purple belt in 2014.
An exciting opportunity led me to Toronto, where I helped manage Action Reaction MMA, Canada’s largest BJJ organization. During my time there, I earned my brown belt in 2018 and, in 2021, was promoted to black belt under Fernando Zulick. Currently, I hold the rank of 1st-degree black belt and continue to teach, train, and compete.
Competition Experience
From the beginning, my goal has always been to win a world championship. I’ve dedicated the last two decades to relentless training and competition, meticulously planning each year to bring me closer to that dream.
Throughout my career, I’ve competed in hundreds of tournaments across Canada, the USA, and Europe, earning medals at every weight class in Canada. My most notable achievements include:
- Winning multiple Provincial Championships
- Securing gold in the Ontario Open weight and absolute divisions, earning a trip to the World Championships
- Earning a bronze medal at the IBJJF Pan American Championships
However, competition is not just about winning—it’s about growth. Over the years, I’ve experienced my share of losses, which have taught me invaluable lessons. Losing is an essential part of the journey, allowing competitors to refine their techniques and improve. To me, competing is a way of life—it’s a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but it’s the best path to realizing your full potential.
Refereeing Experience
Understanding the rules of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is crucial for success in competition. To deepen my knowledge, I became a referee in 2014 with the Ontario Jiu-Jitsu Association (OJA), officiating thousands of matches over the years.
In addition, I am one of the few Canadian IBJJF-certified referees, a distinction that underscores my commitment to the sport. A strong relationship with the IBJJF is vital for anyone aspiring to win a world championship, and my experience as a referee has greatly enhanced my understanding of the sport’s intricacies.
